Know the scam before it reaches you.

SHOAL charts the manipulation techniques behind scams currently circulating — what each one is, who it targets, and the one tell that gives it away. Warm, plain language, because you or someone you love is the one protecting yourself.

How SHOAL works

  • Three states only — Verified, Likely, Unverified. No hidden scoring, no professional-analyst rating shown here.
  • Every hazard on this page has exactly one “the one tell” — a card without one doesn’t get published.
  • No invented hotline numbers or URLs. Anything that looks like contact info here is a real, independent resource — never a number we made up.
  • Reports you send us are reviewed by a person first. Nothing you submit is shown on this page as-is.
Verified — confirmed, multiple independent reports Likely — strong signal, still confirming Unverified — emerging pattern we’re watching

Report a scam you saw

Saw or received something that looks like a scam? Tell us about the technique — what they said, how they reached you, what they asked for. This helps us warn other people.

Optional, and only used if a reviewer needs to ask a follow-up question. Never published.
Thank you — this has been queued for review. It will not appear on this page as raw text; a reviewer looks at every report before anything is added.
Reports are triage input, not a public feed. A person reviews every submission before any hazard is created or updated from it — this prototype does not transmit anything to a live server.

If you think you were targeted right now

Stop the payment or transfer if it hasn’t completed. Contact your bank or card issuer using the number printed on your own card — never a number the caller gave you. You can also file a report with two independent, official U.S. government resources:

These are independent government sites, not operated by SHOAL — we link out rather than invent our own hotline.
